Recession? What recession? Such were the cries that seemed to be emanating from the catwalk at Meadham Kirchhoffthis season. ‘Let them eat cake!’ screamed the sheer opulence of these costumes and so the models quite literally did, plucking decadently iced cupcakes and full blooms from the parlour scenery as they, not so much walked, as luxuriated around the stage.
Indeed, this was not a scene in which Marie Antoinette would look too out of place. Pannier skirts, corset jackets, brocade and boots covered in bows harked back to the luxury of pre-revolution France – a time of colour, passion, decadence, when too much was never enough. So where did the inspiration come from? What does it all mean? Well, according to Ed Meadham, nothing. Nothing more than basking in all things beautiful and wanting as much as you can get. Who are we to argue with that?
