Representing the creative future

FACE Summit 2022 at CSM: Power, Position, Privilege, and Purpose

Everything you need to know about the upcoming FACE and race 2022 Summit

Founded to challenge the lack of Black and Brown academics in higher education, Fashion Academics Creating Equality, FACE, present the 2022 edition of their annual summit; held this month in collaboration with Central Saint Martins with two days of talks, events, and conversations open to everyone on the 13th and 14th of October. Here’s everything you need to know.

Formed to amplify Black voices in academia and higher education, FACE is an intersectional organisation and platform challenging the lack of Black and Brown representation in academia and opening a discussion about the effects this has on young creatives, from all backgrounds.

Co-founded by Sharon Lloyd, Course Director Southampton Solent; Pascal Matthias, Senior Teaching Fellow at the Winchester School of Art and Andrew Ibi, Course Leader at Liverpool John Mores University; FACE work with a range of institutions to improve recruitment and develop anti-racist fashion curriculum in higher education along with other learning resources, such as the FASHION NEEDS COLOUR film.

“The lack of inclusivity within the fashion and beauty industries is a problem, it’s not enough to identify the why. Further and higher education has reached an axis to provide Black creatives the same opportunities as their white counterparts, but is this enough?” – Sharon Lloyd, FACE co-founder

Continuing their work to platform research on identity, power and cultural narratives, FACE announced the 2022 edition of their FACE and RACE Summit, held later this month on the 13th and 14th of October, organised in collaboration with Central Saint Martins.

“The FACE Summit is a space to acknowledge that UK education can provide a critical arena to discuss what’s next and how,” says FACE co-founder Sharon Lloyd. “The lack of inclusivity within the fashion and beauty industries is a problem, it’s not enough to identify the why. Further and higher education has reached an axis to provide Black creatives the same opportunities as their white counterparts, but is this enough?”

“The quality of teaching in nearly every single Higher Education institution cannot measure quality whilst inequality exists.” – Pascal Matthias, FACE co-founder

“We augment the Black voices, which for far too long were marginalised and silenced,” co-founder Pascal Matthias continues, “The quality of teaching in nearly every single Higher Education institution cannot measure quality whilst inequality exists. Conversations with Black academics need to continue at all levels not just to ensure teaching is inclusive but so it is reflective of the wider fashion ecosystem. This can only happen when all voices are heard.”

Presenting an exciting schedule of talks, film screenings and events led by creatives, cultural influencers, artists and academics; including Dr Christine Checinska, Senior Curator in African Fashion at the V&A, fashion designer Osman Yousefzada, BAFTA-winning costume designer PC Williams, visual storyteller Harris Elliot and Fashion Revolution co-founder Orsola de Castro.

Partnering with other organisations including the Slow Factory, Mentoring Matters and the British Fashion Council the summit will be held both online and in person at CSM’s Granary Square campus. With an exciting and varied schedule, talks will cover subjects ranging from Utopia in the Metaverse, Addressing Racism in the Fashion Industry and Black POC Masculinities, to Hair, Race & Beauty, decolonising Fashion education and Digital Fashion, with many more thought-provoking topics and discussions on the schedule.
